While sharing some progress photos with my friend Kim, I was reminded of the beauty of the letterpress process– one that I might take for granted because I get to see it every day. She was so excited to see her wedding invitations being made- so I thought I’d share. Scott and Bo are letterpress perfectionists, and I love watching Two Paperdolls projects come to life downstairs in the printing studio! Here’s a little glimpse:

{A chartreuse green as the first of three colors printed; the stack of invitations about to be fed through the Windmill for the second color}

A poster series by Two Paperdolls

Two Paperdolls has always celebrated the vital roles women play in our society. In light of the upcoming President’s day holiday, our team of illustrators, designers, and pressmen will celebrate the First Ladies of the United States in the way we do best. On Febraury 1st, we will transform Art in the Age into a historical tribute to these remarkable women. The exhibition will include a series of letterpress posters, designed and printed exclusively for the occasion by Two Paperdolls. The exhibition will also include a working Chandler & Price Platen press from the early 1900′s. Join Two Paperdolls to mark our appreciation and admiration of these unpaid but beloved public servants, paying them the tribute they deserve.

Alright, World, we made some grand resolutions and pretty big promises for the new year. It’s January 20th. How are we doing? If you’re holding true to your new year’s goals, well done. We applaude you. If not, now is the perfect time to get back on track. A great way to stay true to those resolutions is to set reminders for yourself. Here are a few handsome ways designers are helping us citizens of the world do just that.

With the To Resolve Project, Chris Streger challenged designers to translate this year’s resolutions into iPhone backgrounds (see also: iPad, iMac, etc) to hold themselves accountable to their commitments. The results are stunning.

While we encourage our brides to make an appointment to come chat with us about their vision for their wedding, you certainly don’t have to be local to work with us! Kelly and Clayton got married in San Antonio, Texas. I designed, printed, and assembled all of their wedding stationery right here in our Wayne studio. Being 1800 miles away from my bride-to-be sister prevented me from fulfilling the typical Maid of Honor duties, so I was so happy to add such a special touch to the occasion. (In the summer of 2010, I posted this save-the-date that I designed for Kelly and Clayton’s wedding.)

The invitation suite:

This November (on their first anniversary!) Kelly received a copy of The Knot- Texas, which featured a four-page story of their wedding! The photos from the issue (and many of the ones below) were taken by San Antonio photographer Amy DeYoung.

Kelly and Clayton are both coffee fanatics, so they had a friend who brews coffee create a batch for them to give to their guests as favors. I designed a label with a message from the couple inviting their guests to join them for coffee sometime- it was also an excuse to share their new address with everyone. A friend embroidered the ring pillow with type from the invitations. Also shown below: menu; venue signage directing guests to the rooftop reception; placecards pinned to miniature pumpkins; framed table number; cigar bar sign; coffee bag labels; coffee bar sign

1. Making time for your art– This is the biggest resolution on this list. Without it, none of the rest matters. We often get caught up in everyday life, ‘the price of gas’, ‘making dinner and deadlines’, etc. We forget the simple pleasures that use to be enough for us. Remember one cannot find time, you have to make time for the things that are important to you. Especially if it’s an outlet for you.

2. Drawing strangers around you– Even if it’s a quick 35 second sketch of the person sitting across from you on a train or at the park, try it out and write the amount of time beside it. Whether the drawing is unfinished or not, it will add character to your sketch book, not to mention the story you’ll have behind them. “Oh, this was a man feeding the birds at Love Park. He got up before I had a chance to finish, but man did he look content just sitting there bonding with nature.” And who knows, maybe you can even give the sketch your own little story.

3. Keeping your sketch/writing pad on you everyday– You never know when a great idea or image will strike you. If you’re like the rest of the country, and you own an iPhone or Android, maybe avoid typing your concept into your phone and actually write it inside of your pad. Remember all of those sloppy little notes that you’d write on the side of a page? Maybe even incorporate your words & notions into the drawing, spiraling around your illustration.

4. Try your hand at a different form of art– As artists we all have one big thing in common; the love for EVERY art. Have you ever wanted to branch out and do something different? Maybe this could be a great year to finally try stand-up comedy, or another type of performance art. There’s nothing wrong with juggling a few new hobbies, especially if it’s for the sake or expanding artistically. Take a class you’ve always wanted to take; culinary, dance, photography, glass blowing, sculpting, etc. You never know, you could be a natural!

5. Redecorate using your own personal art– I find that when I have created an artistic oasis around me, I become more inventive. More inspired and therefore, proactive. Try redecorating your space, maybe even pull a few old pieces you’ve done in the past and hang them up. It’ll give a sense of nostalgia and possibly remind you of a time when life wasn’t so busy.

6. Creating and/or updating your portfolio– Nothing complete’s an artist like a finished portfolio. (When is it ever really finished though?) As we evolve in our lives, our art tends to as well. This may mean taking out some compositions and replacing them with newer work or maybe even old ones, that you can revise or touch up. You’ll be glad you did it, once it’s over.

7. Drawing at least one thing per day that intimidates you– You’re not good at drawing hands? Dedicate one hour to doing nothing but drawing hands. You may be surprised with the outcome by the 34th try. Then you have the potential of your weakness becoming a strong point, and you can move on to another subject matter that you’re a little shaky with. Progression is a step by step sequence.

Happy New Year to all you artists out there! Viva la creativity!

The big question we had to tackle was how do we build a brand to sell burritos in India. Our solution:

”The Legendary Burrito”

India is a peculiar country when it comes to fast food. It’s reminiscent of the U.S. in the 1960′s, when we would go to McDonald’s for an affordable family dinner. That understanding came into sharp focus when Picante contacted us last year. We knew we had a tall order ahead of us, as the ownership moved to introduce the first burrito chain in India.

After interviewing a cross section of our target audience we landed on a brand concept that is connected to something much larger than food. It is linked humorously to the history of Mexico.

Here is our rationale:

It is traditionally told that the burrito was born during one of the most significant conflicts in Mexican history, the Mexican Revolution. Legend has it that a street vendor selling tacos, needed something to keep his tacos warm as he transported them through the growing battlefield. His solution: instead of open tacos he wrapped the contents in large tortillas, both preserving their heat and making them easy to transport.

Despite the obstacles that stood in his way, our hero found a way to overcome. It is in this same spirit that Picante was born. We too are foodies—committed to doing whatever is necessary to use only the freshest quality ingredients in each meal. Similar to our champion, we are committed to providing a delicious alternative to those seeking a nutritious meal.

Ultimately, we built a brand that could easily adapt to spread this story across every medium. The goal is for every experience to feel both international and intimate, historic and authentic. The next time you find yourself roaming through Delhi, be sure to look for a mexican burrito bar. It will surely be delicious.
